Grade Level Standards

Superintendent's Message

The Huntington Beach City School District is an educational community with a long history of excellence in education. It is committed to providing students with academic programs and classroom instruction of the highest quality. Our schools provide a strong emphasis on achieving proficiency and above in the areas of literacy, mathematics and all core areas of the curriculum. We are also committed to providing opportunities which expand and broaden the scope of learning for all students. Regular homework assignments reinforce classroom instruction and develop independent study habits, responsibility, and self motivated direction for students. In addition, another of our top priorities is to provide a safe and orderly learning environment that fosters an atmosphere conducive for learning.

The district’s high expectations for students and the staff are reflected in high API scores and student performance levels. Our schools are frequent recipients of many local, state, and federal awards and honors, including recognition as California Distinguished Schools and National Blue Ribbon Schools.

Our school district is fortunate to be located in a community that understands and values the importance of education. We have parents who make education a priority in their homes. Our community also values and recognizes the importance of preparing our students to be contributing members of society.

We encourage and invite you to become involved in the learning process of our students. There are many opportunities for you to participate in school and district committees or volunteer at the school site. We hope you will take the opportunity to do so.

We are very proud of our schools and hope that you will visit them often. When you do, you will observe students, teachers, support staff, parents and other vital members of our educational community working together as a team. You have our commitment that as a district team we will focus our resources, creativity, and staff talents in order to continue to provide the highest quality of instruction and education experiences for all of our students.

Sincerely,

Gregg Haulk
Superintendent of Schools

Guiding Principles Of Huntington Beach City School District

Character Counts
Respect, caring, trustworthiness, fairness, responsibility, and citizenship are the ethical foundations upon which our district is built. We value each individual who practices, teaches, and serves as the role model for these virtues.

Academic Excellence and Accountability
Academic excellence is the highest p
riority in our district. Students will demonstrate academic proficiency by meeting world class standards. To that end, all stakeholders in the organization—board members, employees, students, and parents—are accountable for carrying out their responsibilities toward that end.

High Expectations
We believe that each child is an individual of great worth entitled to develop to his or her full potential. All children can and will learn, and each deserves equal access to a quality education that is built upon high expectations.

Parent and Community Involvement and Teamwork
Families, staff, and the entire community are full partners, actively working in a collaborative manner for the benefit of each child’s education. We welcome, seek, and expect active participation and involvement of all stakeholders.

Shared Responsibility
We believe that education is a shared responsibility where the student, the school, the home, and the community work together toward common goals.

Civic Pride and Social Responsibility
It is important that students understand the origins of the nation, principles of the Declaration of Independence, and ideals and hopes of the founding patriots. They should develop a respect for the fundamental law of the land, together with a concern for the just enforcement and improvement of the law.

Lifelong Learning
We are committed to display, and develop in our students, habits of the mind and heart that will lead to a lifetime love of learning.

The Move to Common Core Standards:

Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade. In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school.

Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards. Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.

The California Department of Education helps schools make sure that all students are meeting the standards.
